Kiss That Frog

Title: Kiss That Frog
Authors: Brian Tracy and Christina Tracy Stein

In this chapter, it explains that negative emotions called “ugly frogs” are the main obstacles to happiness and success. The authors emphasize that happiness is the main goal of life, and to achieve it depends very much on how we interpret and respond to an event.
This chapter begins with the concept of reframing, which is a psychological technique to change our point of view about difficult experiences. By changing the way we think about the past, we can turn painful experiences into valuable lessons.
One important illustration in this chapter is Brian’s story. Brian came from a poor family and experienced many difficulties in his youth. However, he finally became successful and bought his dream car. After one year, he found out that there was a small part in the engine that limited its performance. When that small part was replaced, the car’s performance increased dramatically. This story symbolizes that one negative belief or small emotional barrier can limit our potential. If that barrier is removed, our growth can increase in an amazing way.

This chapter also explains several important concepts, namely:
Thoughts come before feelings. Some people say that the greatest enemy of humans is their own mind. And that is very true. Our emotions are not caused by the event itself, but by the way we interpret the event.
The Law of Substitution. We can only think about one thing at a time, so we can replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts.
The authors explain that negative emotions such as anger, fear, resentment, and blaming others are “ugly frogs” in the pond of our mind. If we remove them, our mind—like an empty space—will be filled with positive emotions such as happiness, peace, and self-confidence.

Lesson Learned

Some important lessons from this chapter are:
Happiness is a choice. Happiness is determined by the way we think, not by external conditions.
Thoughts create emotions. If we control our thoughts, we also control our feelings.
Negative emotions limit potential. Like the small part in Brian’s car, a small barrier can reduce our performance.
Every problem contains a lesson. Difficulties can become opportunities to grow.
Take responsibility for your own thoughts. A sense of control over yourself increases happiness and self-confidence.

What I Will Do Based on the Content of the Book
Based on the content of this chapter?

I will start training myself to think more positively and practice reframing in daily life. When facing failure or disappointment, I will try to see it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
I will also pay more attention to my thoughts, especially when I feel angry or disappointed. Instead of letting negative emotions grow, I will try to replace them with more constructive thoughts.
